Devouring Words
One of the greatest luxuries of writing full time is my renewed ability to devour words. When I was growing up, my nose was always in a book at the corner table of my parents’ restaurant or I’d sneak in pages in between taking orders. All the librarians knew me by name. The library had been my sanctuary.
Life had temporarily taken me away from reading. My job and being a parent of a small child and the long daily commute had drained me so much each day that I told myself I had no energy or time for reading.
Now, as I set my own schedule for writing, though there still aren’t enough hours in the day, I have more energy. And I prioritize reading because it absolutely makes me a better writer. Since my last update of books read from April 15, I’ve whipped through the following:
Book | Author |
Educated | Tara Westover |
Mother Winter | Sophia Shalmiyev |
All You Can Ever Know | Nicole Chung |
Eleanor & Park | Rainbow Rowell |
Everything Here is Beautiful | Mira T. Lee |
Between the World and Me | Ta-Nehisi Coates |
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake | Aimee Bender |
Hunger | Roxane Gay |
Everything I Never Told You | Celeste Ng |
Thank you, Authors, for sharing your words with me. I was especially moved by Roxane Gay’s rawness and beauty. Each work was a valuable study for content, style, as well as controversy in some cases.
Any books I should add to my list? Let me know! Thank you for reading.
